Music Program at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd
Worship is that time when our congregation comes together as one to offer praise to God, express our gratitude for grace and renew our resolve to walk together with Christ. Psalm 100 tells us to make a joyful noise, not perfect or flawless, but joyful. Our music program aims to uphold the best of our Christian heritage and promote the best of what is written in our time. There are numerous opportunities for sharing musical gifts. Desire and commitment are more important than special training or expertise. We have a place for singers and instrumentalists of all ages, talents and levels who wish to commit to our endeavor.
Good Shepherd Choir
The Good Shepherd Choir is for adults and teens interested in musical leadership during worship. The choir leads the congregational singing of hymns and liturgy and presents anthems during worship throughout the program year. A less formal pick up choir enhances worship during the summer months.
Memorial Handbell Ringers
This ensemble participates in our worship approximately every 4-6 weeks during the program season. We have a 5-octave and a 2-octave set of Schumerich handbells in addition to a 4-octave set of Suzuki handchimes which allows us to explore a wide variety of handbell materials. Experience in reading music is helpful. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00.
Junior Handbells
In this ensemble, the beginning ringer learns to become comfortable with music reading, with ringing handbells, and with participating in worship. The goal is to give ringers a solidfoundation in bell ringing which will for further their skill development. They present music in worship on an occasional basis.
Instrument Ensemble
Our Instrumental Ensemble is an intergenerational group of players of wind and string instruments who assemble for special festival services to accompany our hymns and offer voluntaries before and/or after worship. Rehearsals are set up to accommodate the needs of specific services.
Other Musical Opportunities
Good Shepherd enjoys the liturgy “Of the Lands and Seasons” and assembles a folk ensemble to support these occasions.
During the summer season a variety of vocalists and instrumentalists offer solos and small ensembles. Musicians of all skill levels are invited to this ministry.

Good Shepherd Reads
A group of avid readers gathers periodically to read and discuss current books relating to contemporary church and societal issues. In 2020 we widened our circle, inviting neighboring congregations to join us in reading Austin Channing Brown’s memoir I’m Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness.
